The Miracle of Pregnancy
- During pregnancy, your little belly will gradually bulge as your uterus expands to accommodate your little one.
- When the pregnant mother is about 20 weeks pregnant or 5 months pregnant, the top of the uterus can be felt at the navel level.
- At approximately 32 weeks of pregnancy, the top of the uterus will be at the midpoint between the navel and the sternum.
- Pregnancy is approximately 36 weeks or 9 months, the top of the uterus reaches the sternum.
What is a sagging belly?
After 36 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus is growing and is in a birth position. That is, the baby starts to move its head down into the pelvis. If the bottom is down, the baby’s bottom will move into the pelvis, causing the lower part of the uterus to expand, which is called head-down. During the period when the baby moves down into the pelvis to prepare for birth , the mother’s belly lowers, or what is called “lowering belly”.
First-time mothers may find that after 36 weeks of pregnancy, their belly will be smaller because the fetus, which was previously in the uterus above the pelvis, has moved lower into the pelvis in preparation for birth. However, this does not mean that the belly will only occur in pregnant women who are 36 weeks pregnant. The belly can also occur in other weeks. However, for mothers who have been pregnant before, they will notice the belly shrinking slower than in the first pregnancies. Some mothers do not even notice their belly shrinking until close to delivery. Or, the mother may not feel the belly shrinking at all until the labor pains arrive. However, normally, in the week that the mother feels the belly shrinking, there will usually be labor pains 2 or 3 weeks after the belly shrinks.

- Outside the mother’s womb, it is much lower and there is a dull pain in the pubic area, radiating to the vagina or the vaginal area because the baby’s head or bottom is moving into the pelvis.
- The baby’s head is low in the pelvic region , which squeezes the pregnant mother’s bladder, making it less roomy, causing the pregnant mother to urinate more frequently.
- In addition to the reduced belly, some mothers this week will experience swollen feet, difficulty in sitting and standing, and may experience frequent cramps because the baby’s head and uterus press on the veins in the pelvis.
