Singapore Launches Its Largest-Ever Study on Food Allergies in Children
This June, a landmark four-year study titled The Singapore Food Allergy Story was launched to investigate the rising prevalence of food allergies among local children. Led by the National University Hospital (NUH) and NUS Medicine, in collaboration with KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), National University Polyclinics (NUP), and Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, the study aims to involve over 2,000 children.
The first phase surveys children aged 12 to 24 months during routine polyclinic visits. Those showing allergy symptoms will be referred for further testing. The second phase, starting July, will study children already diagnosed with food allergies.
Common allergens in Singapore include:
-
Eggs, milk, and peanuts in young children
-
Shellfish in teens and young adults
The research also explores the emotional and nutritional impact on families, and seeks to guide future dietary and mental health support.
New Study Warns Midlife Women to Watch Muscle Strength and Visceral Fat

Researchers from the Integrated Women’s Health Programme (IWHP) have found that low muscle strength combined with high visceral fat significantly increases the risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in midlife women.
The findings, drawn from a long-term study of Singaporean women aged 45 to 69, show that:
-
Women with both conditions were more than 2.6 times as likely to develop diabetes
-
A low creatinine-to-cystatin C ratio in blood tests may signal future muscle loss and frailty
-
These changes are not visible through BMI alone
Experts advise midlife women to focus not just on weight loss, but also on muscle-strengthening activities to prevent chronic diseases and maintain physical function.
Real-Time Emergency Wait Times Now Available on the NUHS App

The NUHS App, serving hospitals under the National University Health System, has added new features to help patients plan their emergency department visits more effectively.

-
Digital health declaration forms for faster check-in
-
Access to nearby GPFirst and PaedsENGAGE clinics for non-emergency conditions
-

This update aims to reduce crowding, support better triaging, and improve the overall patient experience—especially for lower-priority cases that may not need hospitalisation.
