Why do pregnant women sneeze often?

Pregnant women often experience many problems during pregnancy, such as easily getting tired, feeling sleepy, feeling aches and pains, or even coughing or sneezing. This makes many pregnant women wonder if it is abnormal for pregnant women to sneeze frequently. What will happen to the baby in the womb? We have the answers to all of these concerns that mothers are worried about.

Is it normal for pregnant women to sneeze frequently?

It is normal for pregnant women to sneeze frequently because the physical changes of pregnant women cause inflammation of the nasal mucosa caused by pregnancy. The factor that causes mothers to suffer from this disease is the hormone estrogen that stimulates the nervous system that supplies the nasal mucosa, causing the blood vessels in the nasal mucosa to expand and stimulating the glands that produce mucus in the nasal mucosa to work more, causing symptoms in the nose or sinuses or may make existing diseases of the nose and sinuses worse.

Symptoms of this disease include a runny nose , a stuffy nose, difficulty breathing, and sneezing. Symptoms usually appear when the mother is pregnant and will return to normal about 2 weeks after the mother gives birth. Symptoms of this disease include a runny nose, a stuffy nose, difficulty breathing, and sneezing. Diseases that are commonly found in pregnant mothers include  allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, rhinitis of pregnancy , and nosebleeds.

Is it dangerous if a pregnant woman sneezes frequently?

Sneezing during pregnancy is not harmful to the fetus or the mother because sneezing is just a symptom of the mother’s illness. However, if the mother gets the flu, it may put the fetus at risk of premature birth and low birth weight.

As for the baby in the womb, it is not dangerous because the baby is well protected by the uterus. Therefore, when the mother sneezes, it does not affect the baby in the womb in any way.

How to take care of your mother when she sneezes often

If you feel your nose is congested due to a nasal disease, you can take care of yourself with the following methods:

1. Allergic rhinitis  :

    • Avoid taking antihistamines continuously during the  first 3  months of pregnancy, especially oral steroids, as they may cause cleft lip and palate in the baby.
    • Use warm saline nasal spray or wash, or inhale boiling steam.
    • Avoid allergens and nasal irritants.
    • Antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays can be used occasionally.

2. Sinusitis:

      • Try rinsing your nose with warm salt water and inhaling steam to improve air circulation.
      • Nasal steroid sprays such as  budesonide may be used, and oral vasoconstrictors (eg,  pseudoephedrine ) should be avoided, especially in the first trimester , as they may prevent the fetal abdominal wall from closing.

Note: If the mother has a severe runny nose and difficulty breathing, especially in the first trimester, it is recommended to see a doctor. Do not buy or use medicines that were used before pregnancy because it may be at risk of abnormalities in the fetus.
